As a 'cowboy' who ends up relocating to a FEMA camp after wildfire burns most of his property, Dusty (Josh O'Connor) looks the part of a depressed, down-on-his luck ranch hand. His new neighbors are nice enough, for sure, and his temporary new residence is more than most could hope for. Yet something's missing in Dusty's life. Could it be, his estranged daughter Callie (Lily LaTorre)?
Rebuilding is a meditative portrayal of a semi-crushed soul trying to find meaning in an unrecognizable environment. As a slice of life, it works fine, and I imagine it would've been ever more impactful as a short film. But stretched to feature length, it offers a lot of silent, beautiful, moving scenes - all of them familiar, done better in previous films. This isn't not a bad movie, but given the lack of a central plot, and a more dramatic inner conflict, it's just - as constructed - to thin, from every single angle.
☆☆1/2
